Women Before & After The Arrival of Rasoolullah
Before the coming of The Beloved Rasool and the Message of Islam, the
condition of women was a very sad and sorrowful one. There was no
respect and dignity for women on this earth.
Before Islam, men thought nothing of women, except that they were a
means of satisfying their carnal desires. Women spent their days and
nights serving their men.
Their condition was such, that even the money which they earned from
working as domestics for others, was given to their husbands, who showed
no thanks, but further oppressed and ill-treated them.
Men before Islam, beat their wives severely like people would beat their
animals. When women were disrespectful or disobedient, then men in that
era of ignorance would torture and torment them, by cutting off parts of
their ears etc. In many instances, women were killed for minor errors.
In the early days, before Islam, the ignorant pagan Arabs buried their
daughters alive as they looked down on the birth of females.
Before Islam, women were not allowed any part of inheritance from the
wealth of their parents, brothers or sisters. Women could not own
anything. They were not allowed to have authority over anything.
In the days of ignorance, some Arabs imprisoned widows in small shacks
for a complete year after the death of their husbands. After a year had
expired, these women would be dressed in rags and paraded like animals
throughout the city.
Similarly, there were many other wicked ways that were used to oppress
women. Women spent their entire lives in pain and discomfort, waiting for
the end of their lives to come.
In places like India, the women were also treated with great disrespect and
were oppressed by their spouses. These women were treated so harshly,
that just the thought of this causes immense distress.
It was part of the Hindu culture, for the woman to worship her husband
(Pati Pooja), and on his death, she would be placed on his burning funeral
bier, to be burnt alive with him. This oppression of females was present in
every country, every race and every tribe in the world.
The lives of women became unbearable, and none was there to free them
from the shackles of oppression. Women had no rights. All a woman could
do, was to hope and pray that Almighty Allah, through His Mercy would
send a Saviour towards the human race.
In a time like this, Almighty Allah sent Rahmatul lil Aalameen (Mercy unto
the Worlds) Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa as the Saviour and the
Protector. The arrival of the Prophet of Mercy Sayyiduna Rasoolullah
opened a new page in the History of the World, and a new page in the lives
Women after the Arrival of
When our Beloved Nabi Sayyiduna Muhammad came to us with the
beautiful and pure religion of Islam, with the Religion of Almighty Allah,
then the lives of all changed.
For women; the Beloved Rasool was and is that Bright Star which
brightened their dark and sad lives. Through the coming of Islam, the
oppression of wicked men disappeared in the light of guidance.
Women were no more slaves and objects of carnal satisfaction, but they
were blessed with a great status in Islam, a status that none had ever given
Like men, women were also given rights, and for the protection of the
rights of women, Almighty Allah revealed Divine verses of the Holy Quran.
Women now became the owners of their dowry, their properties and the
owners of their inheritance from their parents.
Those women, who were once the slaves of men, now became the queens
in the homes of their husbands.
Almighty Allah says in the Glorious Quran,
Almighty Allah created for you from your physique wives, so that you may
gain comfort through them. And He created love and compassion between
Now! No man can beat his wife, seize her property and wealth, remove her
from the home without any valid reason, or oppress her in any way. Every
man is obligated to fulfil his Religious and husbandly rights towards his
Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran
‘Women have the same rights over men, like men have over women. That
is with politeness.’ [Surah Baqara Ruku 28]
Almighty Allah revealed for men, the following divine command,
‘And treat them fairly (in marriage)’ [Surah Nisa Ruku 3]
The entire world should take note of the exalted status that Islam has given
to women. Although Almighty Allah has commanded in the Quran, that He
has made man superior over the woman, He has also made man the
protector and the provider, so that as the superior one, he may protect and
take care of the home and his family.
Islam has bound men and women with their religious duties to one
another, so that they may both live their lives in happiness and comfort,
making their lives a means for success in the hereafter.
Husbands and wives should thus carefully think of the commands of Allah
Almighty and free themselves from the arguments, bickering and fighting
of the days of ignorance (Jihaalat).
If all the women get together and try to repay the Grace of Almighty Allah,
for sending the Beloved Nabi , then they would never be able to re-pay
even one part of this, even until their last breath. Without doubt, the Nabi
came as a Saviour and Protector.
Alhamdu Lillah, Islam gave women such a greatness that they were
removed from the depths of oppression and granted such a status that if a
person wishes to seek Jannat, he would attain it under feet of his mother.
In other words, Islam gave this greatness to a women, showing that until a
mother is not pleased with her son, he will never be able to attain the
pleasure of Allah and His Rasool .
